Dance/movement therapists work with people of all ages, individually, in groups and as families. Clients focus on the changes they want. Goals may include improving self-esteem and body image, developing more effective communication, lifting anxiety or depression, gaining insight into patterns of behavior, as well as creating new patterns for living well. Dance/movement therapists respect each client’s unique movement patterns and comfort levels as the beginning place for self-discovery and change. Of course talking is a apart of the work as well. Sessions combine talking and moving thereby providing new experiences as well as time to integrate learning and new ways of being. Movement is the primary medium which dance/movement therapists use for observation, assessment, research, therapeutic interaction, and interventions. The focus is on the therapeutic, healing and relational aspects of the movement instead of the aesthetic ones.
The BC-DMT credential acknowledges the attainment of the advanced, Board Certified level of dance/movement therapy practice. It signifies both advanced professional attainment and the individual’s preparedness to provide supervision and training in dance/movement therapy, and engage in private practice. This is the highest level of certification offered in the field.
What is Meditation?
Meditation is the process of returning to our innate ability for relaxed attention to our lives. This relaxed and attentive place is our birthright. It is available to all of us. It offers ways to return to the moment, to the fullness of our current experience. As Lorin Roche writes in Meditation 24/7, meditation “is a human instinct. It reminds us to savor life’s beauty and wonder.” From this clear headed place, we are able to react to our environments quickly and with access to all our strengths and creativity. It enables us to be intimately connected with ourselves and the environment.
Lorin Roche also states “When we meditate we dip into the experience of connectedness. We are reminded of our own place in the nature of things. Everyone already knows something about meditation. It’s there in your greatest experiences of love, in your late-night or early morning peaceful moments, in your love of nature, in your wildness and passions. And that is the key – to discover the way or ways that work for your individuality. There are thousands of different approaches. If you build on your natural gateways, then your meditation practice will be more beneficial and you will want to meditate. There are hundreds of gateways into meditation and we each have our favorites. Everybody responds to meditation differently. Is Meditation religious?
